Smart’s ‘B’ Free Day, Free Smart BRO Broadband Kits in UST

Free Smart BRO at Smart's B Free day at USTJust after lunch, me and my classmates when to UST Tan Yan Kee (TYK) Student Center. We were informed that Smart is giving away free Smart BRO Broadband Kits to UST students. Upon arrival, we saw the steps in claiming our free ‘gifts’. We just need to provide a photocopy of our ID cards and our registration form. So we went to the nearby photocopy center inside our library then headed back to TYK. The lobby was full of students falling in line. Some were even sitting on the floor. I understand their eagerness and patience because where can you get a free wireless broadband these days?

We waited a little while before the line really started to move. Then a staff from Smart told everybody that only 240 kits will be given for free. At that point we immediately looked for other students who will attempt to make it before us in line. Fortunately, no one dared because they know that a mob of students is waiting for them. About half an hour, we finally got a form that we need to fill out. That moment we knew that we’ll get a kit for sure. Unfortunately, the folks following us didn’t make it and that we knew we were the last lucky students to have this early Christmas gift.

After filling out the form and getting a piece of our new Smart BRO kits, we finally bid goodbye. At home, I immediately tried it out. I already own a Globe Visibility USB so I was excited to find out which is really the fastest? I didn’t install the software of Smart BRO because it has the same manufacturer which is ZTE Corporation. It run smoothly and tried to connect to the internet. Now I know who’s really telling the truth in their commercials. Smart is definitely faster than Globe! When using Globe, I rarely get to reach 512kbps so that really sucks right? What’s worse, it caches the pictures (jpeg). It makes the pictures look crumpled and all so browsing the net is not fun. When I tried Speedtest, I got 1.5mbps as download speed and 1mbps as the upload. I don’t know if it’s the vicinity but I live in Quezon City area so I suppose it should have been faster.

At any rate, this post is not influenced by Smart just because I got their kit for free. I just want to share what I experienced and nothing more than that. By the way, I’m a Globe Prepaid user.

hello, I’m also one of those lucky thomasians to get a free kit. I must say it’s really faster than globe (although I’m using the tattoo with a HUAWEI dongle) It reaches upto 1.3MBps (I’m also within QC) while with Globe, I’m lucky if I reach 800KBps.

But as I tried to download (specifically a movie from Rapidshare, 1.4GB) Smart kept on disconnecting me (after 2 – 4 minutes, the DL speed will always deteriorate until it reaches 0kbps) while with Globe, the download still continues, although only at the rate of 90-100kbps. Well at least Globe will be the FASTEST to finish the download while Smart Bro is FASTER on browsing. I’ll try to swap dongles so I can check if the modem affects the speed and stability.

But to sum it up, napaka reasonable ng pag-pila kanina, aircon naman sa TYK eh haha. And 20 minutes for a P999 dongle? PRICELESS haha!

Kuya, I can see that you are an Eng’g student. Anong course mo? haha

@kevs -I downloaded a movie from mininova.org using BitTorrent and I haven’t encountered problems like yours. Anyway, I was lucky that someone informed us that Smart was there at TYK. Hindi din kasi ako madalas pumupunta sa gawing Dapitan dahil medyo malayo sa bldg. hehe. Information Systems nga pala ang course ko. :D

Well finally today Smart Bro had been stable (I’m downloading Adobe Air). Maybe because it’s morning? I haven’t tried swapping sims with my Huawei dongle because I just knew it’s sim-locked to Globe pala T_T

Actually, hindi ko na ininstall yung software ng Smart dahil it works well dun sa Globe Visbility client. Pareho kasi sila ZTE.
Yeah, I know Ma’am Mitch. She’s my prof for quite a number of subjects before. This sem hindi ko sure pero mabait naman s’ya. :D
