Hello World, Hello to a Life of Learning

Of all the programming books that I’ve read over the past, one thing is common; they all start on how to display two words, Hello World. A day before my 18th birthday, I finally worked on my first WordPress theme. Months of reading and ‘googling’ had paid off. My sleepless nights will, for now, be finally over. At last, I found something that I enjoy doing and for sure, will benefit me and my future career and to start is this first post on my blog (well, technically, this isn’t the first but the post before this was just generated by WordPress and I decided not to remove it).

Just a few months ago, I was so excited for my subject ICS7 (Interface Design and Web Technologies). It was the first time since my high school HTML lessons that I would be able to work on things concerning the internet. I can’t say that I’m truly a web savvy (though I have accounts on major networking and bookmarking sites, oh mind you, I have deleted my Friendster account) because I don’t have a stable internet connection and I’m not always online. But the fact that I’m pursuing a career in this field, I’m doing the best I can to be good at this. Anyway, filled with excitement for the subject, I bought my own domain name and a space on a web server. I got to explore the cool blog platform, WordPress which is equipped with really nice features. After that, I searched the net for available e-books on Web Design and I even bought a copy of the 2nd edition of WordPress for Dummies on eBay. Then I worked my heart out on reading every detail of those books (even the authors themselves advised to skip certain portions of the books if the reader would like).

Following those events, I finally got a little idea of how things work. I tried various design ideas from websites that I saw pleasing to the eye. Some call them inspiration and that was the right term for them. I worked on my Photoshop skills but later on, I found myself relying on CSS for the aesthetics. I made a mock-up HTML of my design then converted applied PHP tags from WordPress. After finishing a pretty working theme, I was unsatisfied with some browser issue so I decided to start from scratch again. But this time, I was able to do it much quicker. I tested it on my ‘sandbox’ server and after being contented with the result, I decided to do the final touches. And just before my self-proclaimed deadline, I did it a day earlier and named my theme ‘Learning Life 1.0’. By the way, I was born on May 31st.
